Of all the tobaccos known amongst pipe smoker as VaPers – blends containing various Virginias and Perique – De Luxe Navy Rolls may well be the most iconic. Originally part of the now defunct Dunhill range, it returned a few years ago as a Peterson tobacco, with its recipe unchanged.
It truly is a feast for all the senses. First for the eyes, when you open the tin to reveal dappled thin “coins”, one-and-a-half inch in diameter, neatly fanned out. Then the nose, as you take in the wonderfully fruity natural aroma, with no hint of flavouring. As you dip into the tin, you discover how nice the coins are to the touch – whichever way you prefer to fold or rub them to fill your bowl.
Once lit, the tobacco burns surprisingly coolly, giving a highly satisfying smoke throughout. The taste is slightly sweet, with a dry yet spicy note of Perique and the freshness of the Virginias that lingers on the palate.
